Moving & Packing Advice
Moving
Confirm the date of your move.
If possible arrange your moving company as soon as possible. ( I hear MANGO
VANGO is good).
Finalise your move with landlords, estate agents, flatmates etc.
Ensure the new place is ready at the agreed date, it is worth getting the keys to the new place a few days ahead, this enables you to get a few essentials in, and to avoid absent caretakers etc.
If possible, where parking is a problem where you live, in Prague it is common practice to place signs outside indicating you are moving on a certain date normally done with a few pieces of A4 tied with string to trees or signs, people do generally respect this.
Arrange delivery of new furniture etc. for when you move in, or before if possible.
Take this time to see if there is anything you no longer use, whether it be old clothes, furniture, these can be sold or taken to a charity shop.
Ensure utility companies, the bank, any regular deliveries, are informed, Czech post does have a mail re-direction service. (details TBA)
Packing
Get what you need, Boxes, Packing Tape, Marker Pen, Bubble wrap, Old Newspapers.
Start packing as soon as you can, depending how much time you have getting as much of your possessions together earlier will save a lot of time and stress later.
Work room by room, place boxes into each room and fill the boxes with non-essential items as your move date gets closer finalise the last few items.
When packing kitchen items wrap all crockery and glassware with newspaper or suitable paper so that they cannot move around in the boxes. Also run down the stock in the fridge & freezer prior to moving, clean and defrost the previous day.
Try to balance to weight of the boxes so as not to overload them, also do not try to save money on tape or packaging.
Avoid using rubbish or shopping bags for packaging, they are not designed for it and do not work.
For special items take extra care with packing "the term wrapping their kids in cotton wool" can apply just as well to a family heirloom or prized piece of furniture.
Should you have to take apart flat pack furniture, because it will not fit out of the flat, it is recommended that is is taken apart completely including all fittings, handles etc. this will prevent scratching and corners shearing.
Should the above be all a little too much of a weight on your mind and not least your arms, I am happy to arrange to come and pack for you with a helper or two, the hourly rate for this service is the same as my moving service, although due to parking problems it is best done at least one day prior to the actual move.
I can arrange to purchase boxes, tape, bubble wrap and deliver it to you, in advance of your booking .
NB. Piano and large safe moving is not a service I can offer.
Lastly do not underestimate the work involved, give yourself double the time you think you will need, do not leave things to the last minute it will take a lot longer and be more stressful if you have not prepared, moving is not a holiday, having everything ready to go will save a lot of headaches and stress, a move across Prague can be as tough as any, try and get some time off work if you can, if not it is well worth staying off the booze giving up free time activities to get it right.
